The Stretch Test: How to Tell Whether Your Dark Circles Are Pigment, Blood Vessels, or Shadow
Most under-eye treatments fail because people treat the wrong type of dark circle. A few simple at-home checks, borrowed from dermatology exam rooms, can point you toward the actual cause before you spend money on the wrong fix.

Ask a dermatologist why so many dark circle products disappoint, and the answer is usually the same: the buyer never identified what kind of dark circle they had. Under-eye darkness is not one condition. It is at least three distinct problems, sometimes overlapping, and each responds to different interventions. A brightening cream built for excess pigment will do almost nothing for a circle caused by thin skin over blood vessels, and neither will touch a circle that is really just a shadow cast by facial structure.
Clinicians typically sort dark circles into three broad categories: pigmented, vascular, and structural. Pigmented circles come from excess melanin in the skin itself, often driven by genetics, sun exposure, chronic rubbing, or post-inflammatory changes from eczema and allergies. Vascular circles come from the blue, purple, or reddish tint of veins and capillaries showing through the under-eye skin, which is among the thinnest on the body, often less than half a millimeter. Structural circles are not discoloration at all. They are shadows created by a tear trough hollow, an under-eye bag, or loss of midface volume, and they change dramatically with lighting.
The good news is that the same quick assessments doctors use during a consultation can be approximated at home in about two minutes, in front of a mirror, in even natural daylight.
The stretch test. Place a fingertip below the dark area and gently pull the skin downward and slightly outward, toward the cheekbone. Watch what happens to the color. If the darkness stays exactly as dark while the skin is stretched, melanin in the skin is the likely culprit, because pigment travels with the skin. If the darkness gets more intense or more blue-purple when stretched, that points to a vascular cause, since stretching thins the skin further and makes underlying vessels more visible. If the darkness improves or nearly disappears when you stretch, the problem is largely structural: you have flattened the hollow, and the shadow it was casting is gone.
The lighting test. Structural circles are creatures of overhead light. Stand under a ceiling light or outdoors at midday and note the darkness, then hold your phone flashlight directly in front of your face at eye level and look again. If the circle fades substantially with front-facing light, shadow from a tear trough or puffiness is doing most of the work. Pigmented and vascular circles do not care much about the angle of light. They look roughly the same from every direction.
The pressure test. Press gently on the darkened area for a few seconds with a clean fingertip and release. Vascular darkness often blanches briefly, meaning it lightens as blood is pushed out of the vessels, then refills. Pigment does not blanch. This is the same principle behind pressing a glass against a rash to check for blanching, applied to the periorbital area.
Supporting clues. A few history questions sharpen the picture. Did the circles appear or worsen after a period of allergies, eczema, or frequent eye rubbing? That favors pigment, especially in medium to deep skin tones, where post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation is more common. Do the circles look worse when you are tired, congested, menstruating, or after alcohol? That favors a vascular component, since anything that dilates vessels or slows drainage makes them more visible. Have close family members had the same look since their twenties? Both pigmented and structural circles run strongly in families. Did the darkness arrive gradually in your late thirties or forties alongside hollowing under the eyes? That is the classic structural pattern.
Why does this triage matter so much? Because the treatment menus barely overlap. Pigmented circles respond to sun protection, topical agents that interrupt melanin production such as azelaic acid, vitamin C, or prescription options, and in some cases carefully chosen pigment-targeting procedures. Vascular circles respond to measures that thicken the skin or address the vessels themselves: retinoids to build collagen over time, caffeine-containing topicals for modest short-term constriction, and management of allergies and sleep. Structural circles generally do not respond to any cream, because there is no color to correct. They are addressed by restoring volume to the hollow or reducing the bag above it, decisions that require an in-person evaluation.
Two caveats. First, most people over thirty have a mixed picture, commonly pigment plus structure or vessels plus structure, so partial results on these tests are normal and mean a combined approach may be needed. Second, if darkness is new, rapidly worsening, one-sided, or accompanied by swelling, pain, or vision changes, skip the self-tests and see a clinician, since thyroid disease, dermatitis, and other conditions can present around the eyes.
Self-testing will not replace a professional exam, and a dermatologist can add tools like a Wood lamp to confirm where pigment sits in the skin. But two minutes with a mirror, a fingertip, and a flashlight will tell you more than most product labels ever will, and it may save you from a drawer full of creams aimed at a problem you never had.
