Walk into any pharmacy and you will find a wall of eye creams promising to erase dark circles. What the packaging rarely says is that dark circles are not one condition. Dermatologists generally sort them into three broad categories: pigmented, vascular, and structural. Each has a different mechanism, and each responds to different interventions. A brightening cream built for excess melanin will do almost nothing for a hollow that casts a shadow, and a filler designed for hollows can make visible blood vessels look worse.

The good news is that a rough self-assessment takes about two minutes, a mirror, and decent lighting. Clinicians use versions of these same maneuvers during consultations, and while a home check is no substitute for an in-person diagnosis, it can save you months of buying the wrong products.

Step one: the stretch test. Stand in front of a mirror in natural daylight if possible. Look slightly upward, place a clean fingertip just below the dark area, and gently pull the skin downward and slightly outward. Watch what happens to the color. If the darkness stretches with the skin and stays roughly the same shade, pigment in the skin itself is likely a major contributor. Melanin sits within the epidermis and upper dermis, so it travels wherever the skin goes. If the darkness gets noticeably worse when stretched, turning more blue, purple, or red, the cause is more likely vascular. Stretching thins the already thin under-eye skin, which makes the network of small veins and capillaries beneath it easier to see. And if the darkness largely disappears when you stretch, you are probably looking at a structural shadow: a groove or hollow, often called a tear trough, that traps shade under overhead light. Pulling the skin flattens the contour and the shadow vanishes.

Step two: the light test. Take two photos of your face, one under an overhead light and one with light hitting you straight on, such as facing a window. Structural circles change dramatically between the two, because shadows depend entirely on the angle of light. Pigmented circles look nearly identical in both photos. Vascular circles usually fall somewhere in between and may look worse when you are tired, congested, or have been rubbing your eyes, since all three increase blood pooling in the area.

Step three: check your history. Pigmented circles, sometimes called periorbital hyperpigmentation, are more common in people with medium to deep skin tones and often run in families. Chronic rubbing from allergies or eczema drives pigment production too, a pattern sometimes described as an allergic shiner overlapping with post-inflammatory pigmentation. Vascular circles tend to fluctuate day to day and worsen with poor sleep, alcohol, nasal congestion, and salt intake, all of which affect blood flow and fluid retention. Structural circles are frequently a story of age or anatomy: fat pads under the eye descend or shrink, the cheekbone provides less support, and a groove forms where skin is tethered to bone by a ligament.

Why the distinction matters. Once you know your dominant type, the treatment logic becomes much clearer. Pigmented circles respond, slowly, to ingredients that interrupt melanin production or speed cell turnover: azelaic acid, vitamin C, retinoids, kojic acid, and daily broad-spectrum sunscreen, which is arguably the single most important step since ultraviolet light drives pigment. Vascular circles are harder to treat topically, though caffeine can temporarily constrict vessels and retinoids may thicken skin over time, making vessels less visible. Managing allergies and sleep position, since fluid pools when lying flat, often helps more than any cream. Structural circles do not respond to skincare at all in any meaningful way, because there is nothing wrong with the skin. The problem is contour, which is why these cases are the ones most often discussed in the context of injectable fillers or, in more advanced cases, surgical fat repositioning, decisions that require an in-person medical evaluation.

One important caveat: most people are mixed. Real-world dark circles are rarely pure examples of a single category. A person can have mild hollowing, thin skin revealing vessels, and a layer of pigment from years of allergy rubbing, all at once. That is why a stretch test that gives a partial result, darkness that fades somewhat but not completely, is entirely normal. It simply means more than one mechanism is at play and a layered approach makes sense.

A final note of caution. Sudden, one-sided, or rapidly worsening darkness around the eye, especially with swelling, pain, or vision changes, is not a cosmetic issue and warrants prompt medical attention. And persistent circles that resist reasonable self-care are worth a visit to a board-certified dermatologist, who can use tools like a Wood's lamp or dermoscopy to confirm what your mirror could only estimate. Knowing your type is not a cure, but it is the difference between guessing and actually treating the problem you have.
