The Stretch Test: How to Tell Whether Your Dark Circles Are Pigment, Blood Vessels, or Shadow
Most under-eye treatments fail because they target the wrong cause. Three simple at-home checks, borrowed from dermatology exam rooms, can tell you which of the three main types you actually have.

Walk into any pharmacy and you will find a wall of eye creams promising to erase dark circles. Ask a dermatologist why so many of them disappoint, and you will usually get the same answer: the product was aimed at the wrong problem. Under-eye darkness is not one condition. It is at least three, each with a different mechanism, and each responding to a different set of interventions. Before spending money on brighteners, lasers, or filler consultations, it is worth spending two minutes in front of a mirror figuring out which type you have.
The three mechanisms, briefly. Clinicians generally sort periorbital darkening into three buckets. The first is pigmented dark circles, caused by excess melanin deposited in the skin itself. This is common in people with medium to deep skin tones, often runs in families, and can be worsened by rubbing, allergies, and sun exposure. The second is vascular dark circles, where the darkness is not in the skin but beneath it. The lower eyelid skin is among the thinnest on the body, often under half a millimeter, and the venous plexus and orbicularis muscle underneath can show through as a blue, purple, or maroon tint. The third is structural dark circles, which are not discoloration at all. They are shadows cast by anatomy: a deep tear trough, volume loss along the orbital rim, or a bulging fat pad above a hollow. In practice many people have a blend, but one mechanism usually dominates.
Test one: the stretch test. Look in a mirror in even lighting. Place a clean fingertip just below the dark area and gently pull the skin downward and slightly outward, putting it under mild tension. Watch what happens to the color. If the darkness stays exactly as dark, or gets slightly more visible as the skin thins under stretch, the pigment is likely sitting in the skin itself. That points toward melanin. If the darkness fades noticeably when stretched, the color was probably coming from vessels or muscle beneath the skin, and stretching temporarily changed how light passes through. If the darkness disappears almost completely, and what you were seeing was really a groove flattening out, shadow was the main culprit.
Test two: the lighting test. Structural circles are an optical event, so they respond dramatically to light direction. Stand under a harsh overhead light, the kind found in bathrooms and elevators, and note how dark the area looks. Then face a window with soft, frontal daylight, or hold your phone flashlight directly in front of your face at eye level. If the circles largely vanish with frontal light, shadow from a tear trough or hollow is doing most of the work. Pigment and vascular discoloration do not care where the light comes from. They look roughly the same in both conditions.
Test three: the tilt test. Lie flat for a minute or tilt your head back, then look quickly in a mirror, or take a selfie while reclined. Vascular circles often deepen when you are horizontal because venous pooling increases, which is also why they tend to look worst on waking and after poor sleep, alcohol, or a salty meal. Pigmented circles are stable regardless of position, time of day, or hydration.
Why the answer changes the treatment. If your circles are primarily pigmented, the relevant tools are the ones that act on melanin: daily broad-spectrum sunscreen up to the lash line, gentle handling to stop rub-induced pigmentation, and ingredients with evidence for pigment modulation such as azelaic acid, kojic acid, vitamin C derivatives, and low-strength retinoids, introduced slowly on thin eyelid skin. Treating an allergy that drives eye rubbing often matters more than any cream. If your circles are primarily vascular, pigment-fading ingredients will do little. The logic shifts to improving skin thickness over time with retinoids, temporarily constricting vessels with caffeine, managing fluid with sleep position and sodium intake, and, in clinical settings, vascular-targeted laser approaches. If your circles are primarily structural, no topical product can fill a hollow. The honest options are optical, meaning light-reflecting concealers, or anatomical, meaning volume-based procedures discussed with a qualified physician, with a careful weighing of risks in this delicate area.
One caveat. These home tests are a sorting tool, not a diagnosis. Thyroid conditions, chronic allergies, anemia, dermatitis, and certain medications can all contribute to periorbital darkening, and mixed presentations are the norm rather than the exception. If circles appear suddenly, affect one eye only, or come with swelling, itching, or pain, that warrants a medical evaluation rather than a shopping trip.
The broader lesson is simple. Dark circles are a symptom with several possible causes, and matching the intervention to the mechanism is the single biggest predictor of whether anything works. Two minutes with a mirror, a fingertip, and a flashlight will tell you more than most product labels ever will.
