That is because the phrase dark circles describes at least four distinct conditions that happen to look similar in a bathroom mirror. Each has a different mechanism, and each responds to different interventions. Treating one type with the tools meant for another is the single most common reason people report that nothing works.

The standard clinical sorting method is often called the stretch test, sometimes paired with a light angle check. It requires no equipment beyond your fingers, a mirror, and a window. Here is how it works and what each result means.

Step one: stretch the skin. Using clean fingers, gently pull the under-eye skin downward and slightly outward, the way a clinician would when examining the area. Watch what happens to the color.

If the darkness stays exactly the same or gets slightly more visible, the cause is most likely pigment. This is true hyperpigmentation: excess melanin deposited in the epidermis or dermis. It is common in people with medium to deep skin tones, often runs in families, and can be worsened by chronic rubbing from allergies or eczema, a phenomenon dermatologists link to post-inflammatory pigment change. Pigment sits in the skin itself, so stretching the skin does not change its appearance. If the darkness fades noticeably when stretched, the cause is more likely vascular. The thin skin under the eye, often less than one millimeter thick, allows the bluish or purplish network of veins and capillaries beneath it to show through. Stretching thins and blanches the tissue, temporarily changing how light passes through it. Vascular circles worsen with poor sleep, nasal congestion, alcohol, and anything that increases blood pooling. This is the one category where sleep genuinely matters, and where cold compresses and caffeine-containing eye products have a plausible mechanism, since caffeine is a mild vasoconstrictor. The effect of topicals is modest and temporary, which is worth knowing before spending heavily.

Step two: check the light angle. Now release the skin and look at your face in a mirror near a window, first facing the light, then with the light coming from directly above. If the circles nearly disappear when light hits the face straight on but look dramatic under overhead light, you are probably looking at structural shadow rather than discoloration at all. This pattern comes from the tear trough, a groove where the orbital bone meets the cheek. As facial fat descends or thins with age, the groove deepens and casts a shadow. No cream lightens a shadow, because there is no pigment to lighten. This type responds to volume-based approaches, most commonly hyaluronic acid filler placed by an experienced injector, or in some cases surgical repositioning of fat. It is also the type most flattered by simple lighting changes in photographs, which explains why the same face can look rested or exhausted depending on the room.

The fourth pattern: laxity and texture. In older adults, the darkness sometimes comes from crepey, loose skin that folds and traps shadow in fine lines. Stretching smooths the skin and the darkness improves, but unlike vascular circles, the skin itself looks thin and finely wrinkled at rest. Retinoids, resurfacing procedures, and energy-based skin tightening are the relevant category here, because the goal is collagen support rather than pigment reduction or volume replacement.

Most people are mixed. Clinical surveys of patients presenting with dark circles consistently find that pure single-type cases are the minority. A person can have inherited pigmentation plus a developing tear trough plus thin vascular skin. This is why honest consultations often involve staged plans rather than one fix, and why a product that helped a friend may do nothing for you even if your circles look identical in photos.

A final caution: persistent one-sided darkness, sudden onset, swelling, or circles accompanied by itching and rubbing deserve a medical evaluation rather than a shopping trip. Allergic disease, thyroid conditions, and dermatitis all show up under the eyes, and treating the underlying condition often does more than any cosmetic approach.
