The Stretch Test: How to Tell If Your Dark Circles Are Pigment, Blood Vessels, or Shadow
Most dark circle treatments fail because people never identify which of the three main types they actually have. A two-minute self-exam in front of a mirror can point you in the right direction.

Walk down any skincare aisle and you will find dozens of products promising to erase dark circles. What the packaging rarely mentions is that dark circles are not one condition. Dermatologists generally sort them into three categories: pigmented, vascular, and structural. Each has a different cause, and each responds to different interventions. A brightening cream built for pigment will do almost nothing for a shadow caused by facial anatomy, and a filler designed to correct a hollow will not lighten melanin deposits. Before spending money on any fix, it is worth spending two minutes figuring out which type you are dealing with.
The most useful at-home tool is what clinicians informally call the stretch test. Stand in front of a mirror in good, even lighting. Place one finger just below the dark area and gently pull the skin downward and slightly outward. Watch what happens to the color.
If the darkness moves with the skin and stays just as dark, pigment is the likely culprit. Pigmented dark circles are caused by excess melanin deposited in the epidermis or dermis. This pattern is more common in people with medium to deep skin tones and often runs in families, a presentation sometimes called periorbital hyperpigmentation. It can be worsened by sun exposure, chronic eye rubbing, eczema, and allergic irritation, all of which trigger post-inflammatory pigment production. The color tends to look brown or tan rather than blue, and it usually extends beyond the immediate under-eye area, sometimes onto the upper lid.
If the darkness stays put or looks more purple and blue when stretched, the cause is probably vascular. The skin under the eye is among the thinnest on the body, often under one millimeter, and it sits directly over a dense network of small veins and the orbicularis oculi muscle. When that skin is thin or pale, the bluish tone of deoxygenated blood shows through. Vascular circles typically look blue, purple, or reddish, and they often get worse with poor sleep, allergies, nasal congestion, and menstruation, all of which increase blood pooling or vessel dilation in the area. A second confirming sign: press gently on the area for a few seconds. Vascular darkness often blanches briefly, then returns as blood refills the vessels.
If the darkness fades or disappears when you stretch the skin or tilt your face up toward an overhead light, you are most likely looking at a structural shadow. This is arguably the most misunderstood category. The dark appearance is not in the skin at all. It is a shadow cast into the tear trough, the groove that runs from the inner corner of the eye diagonally down across the cheek. Age-related loss of fat and bone support deepens this groove, but plenty of younger people have a naturally prominent tear trough from birth. Under-eye bags make the effect worse, because the bulge above the hollow deepens the shadow below it. The giveaway is lighting: structural circles look dramatic under harsh overhead light and nearly vanish in soft, frontal light or in a flash photo.
Why does this classification matter so much? Because the effective interventions barely overlap.
For pigmented circles, the evidence supports topical agents that interrupt melanin production, including azelaic acid, vitamin C, kojic acid, and retinoids, along with strict daily sun protection, since ultraviolet light drives pigment synthesis. Treating any underlying allergy or habit of eye rubbing is equally important, because ongoing inflammation will outpace any cream. Chemical peels and certain pigment-targeting lasers are in-office options, though they require caution in deeper skin tones due to the risk of rebound pigmentation.
For vascular circles, the goal is either to constrict vessels or to thicken the skin above them. Caffeine-based topicals can temporarily narrow superficial vessels, which is why they show modest short-term effects in studies. Retinoids used over months can stimulate collagen and slightly increase dermal thickness, making vessels less visible. Managing allergies and congestion, sleeping with the head slightly elevated, and adequate sleep address the pooling side of the equation.
For structural circles, no cream will help, because there is nothing in the skin to treat. Options include hyaluronic acid filler placed in the tear trough to reduce the groove, or in more advanced cases, lower eyelid surgery to reposition fat. Concealer and lighting are legitimate non-medical strategies here, and they work precisely because the problem is optical.
One final complication: many people have a mixed picture, most commonly pigment layered over a structural hollow, or thin vascular skin sitting in a tear trough. If your stretch test gives ambiguous results, that overlap is probably why, and it is a reasonable moment to see a board-certified dermatologist who can examine the area under proper lighting. The takeaway is simple. Diagnose first, treat second. The two-minute mirror test will not replace a clinical exam, but it will keep you from buying a solution to a problem you do not have.
