Pigment, Vessels, or Shadow: The Three-Minute Test That Tells You Which Dark Circle You Actually Have
Most under-eye treatments fail because they target the wrong mechanism. A simple stretch test, a mirror, and a flashlight can sort the three main causes before you spend money on the wrong fix.

Ask ten people why they have dark circles and most will say tiredness. Ask ten dermatologists and you will get a more useful answer: dark circles are not one condition. They are at least three distinct problems that happen to look similar in a bathroom mirror. Pigment in the skin, blood vessels showing through thin skin, and structural shadow cast by the shape of the face each create the same general impression of darkness, but they respond to completely different treatments. Getting the diagnosis wrong is the single most common reason an expensive eye cream or an in-office procedure does nothing.
The stretch test, and why it works
Stand in front of a mirror in indirect daylight. Gently pull the skin under one eye downward and slightly outward with a clean fingertip. Watch what happens to the dark area.
If the darkness stretches and moves with the skin, staying just as dark, the color lives in the skin itself. That points to pigmentary dark circles, meaning excess melanin deposited in the epidermis or upper dermis. This pattern is more common in people with medium to deep skin tones and often runs in families. Rubbing from allergies, eczema, and chronic sun exposure all push melanocytes to produce more pigment in this thin, vulnerable skin.
If the darkness fades or lightens noticeably when you stretch, you are most likely looking at vascular dark circles. The color is not in the skin. It is the bluish or purplish network of veins and capillaries sitting underneath skin that is simply too thin to hide them. The under-eye area has some of the thinnest skin on the body, often under half a millimeter, and it thins further with age as collagen production declines. Stretching temporarily compresses and redistributes that vascular show, which is why the tint softens.
If the darkness essentially disappears when you stretch, or when you tilt your chin up toward an overhead light, you probably have structural shadow. This is not discoloration at all. It is a groove, usually the tear trough, where the cheek fat has descended or the under-eye area has hollowed, and overhead light cannot reach into the valley. Take a photo with a flash pointed straight at your face: if the circles vanish in the flash photo but return under ceiling light, shadow is your answer.
Why the distinction changes everything
Each mechanism has its own logical interventions, and none of them cross over well.
Pigmentary circles respond to the same tools used for other forms of hyperpigmentation, adapted for delicate skin: daily broad-spectrum sunscreen, gentle retinoids to speed cell turnover, and brightening ingredients such as azelaic acid, kojic acid, or low-strength hydroquinone under medical supervision. Treating the trigger matters too. If allergic rubbing is driving the pigment, an antihistamine and habit change will outperform any serum. Chemical peels and certain pigment-targeting lasers can help, but in deeper skin tones they carry a real risk of making pigmentation worse if performed aggressively, which is why patch testing and conservative settings matter.
Vascular circles do not respond to brightening ingredients, because there is no excess pigment to brighten. The strategy here is either constricting the vessels or thickening the curtain of skin that covers them. Caffeine-containing eye products offer a modest, temporary vasoconstrictive effect, which is why they can look impressive for a few hours and then fade. Longer-term gains come from collagen-building approaches: retinoids used consistently over months, and in-office options such as microneedling or certain energy-based devices that stimulate dermal thickening. Cold compresses in the morning reduce transient vessel dilation from sleep position and fluid pooling, which is the small kernel of truth inside the tired-eyes myth.
Structural shadow is a geometry problem, and topicals cannot change geometry. Camouflage works: a peach or salmon-toned corrector counteracts the shadow visually. For a physical correction, volume replacement in the tear trough with hyaluronic acid filler, performed by an experienced injector, can reduce the groove that casts the shadow. This is a technique-sensitive area with real risks, including lumpiness and a bluish tint called the Tyndall effect if product is placed too superficially, so conservative dosing is the norm among careful practitioners. In cases driven by bulging under-eye fat rather than hollowing, surgical blepharoplasty addresses the anatomy directly.
Most people have a blend
The honest complication is that many people carry two mechanisms at once, commonly pigment plus vascular show, or vascular show plus early hollowing. The stretch test still helps: it tells you which component dominates and where to start. A reasonable sequence for mixed cases is sunscreen and a retinoid as the foundation, since both help pigment and skin thickness simultaneously, with targeted additions after eight to twelve weeks based on what remains.
One last calibration point. Dark circles are overwhelmingly a cosmetic concern, but sudden, one-sided, or rapidly worsening periorbital darkening, especially with swelling or pain, deserves a medical evaluation rather than a skincare routine. For everyone else, three minutes with a mirror will save months of treating the wrong problem.
