The Stretch Test: How to Tell If Your Dark Circles Are Pigment, Blood Vessels, or Shadow
Most under-eye treatments fail because people treat the wrong type of dark circle. A two-minute self-assessment can point you toward the mechanism actually causing yours.

Walk down any skincare aisle and you will find dozens of products promising to erase dark circles. Most of them disappoint, and the reason is rarely that the ingredients are fake. The reason is that dark circles are not one condition. Dermatology literature generally sorts them into three broad mechanisms: pigmentary, vascular, and structural. Each responds to different interventions, and a treatment that helps one type can do nothing for another. Before spending money, it helps to know which category you are in, and there is a simple at-home assessment that clinicians often use as a first pass.
The stretch test. Stand in front of a mirror in natural daylight, look straight ahead, and gently pull the under-eye skin downward and slightly outward with one finger. Watch what the discoloration does. If the darkness stretches with the skin and stays just as visible, pigment in the skin itself is likely a major contributor. If the darkness fades or lightens as you stretch, the color is probably coming from blood vessels beneath thin skin, because stretching temporarily compresses and disperses that vascular show-through. If the darkness essentially disappears when you tilt your head back or shine light directly at the area from below, you are likely dealing with shadow cast by the anatomy of the under-eye, not discoloration at all.
Pigmentary dark circles come from excess melanin deposited in the epidermis or dermis. This pattern is more common in people with medium to deep skin tones and often has a genetic component, sometimes visible in parents and siblings. Chronic rubbing from allergies or eczema can worsen it through a process called post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, where irritated skin responds by producing more melanin. Sun exposure compounds it. If this is your type, the logical tools are the ones that address melanin: daily broad-spectrum sunscreen extended all the way to the lash line, and topical agents studied for pigment such as azelaic acid, vitamin C, kojic acid, or prescription retinoids and hydroquinone under medical supervision. Managing the underlying allergy or eye-rubbing habit matters as much as any cream, because the trigger keeps reloading the problem.
Vascular dark circles are a transparency problem. The skin of the lower eyelid is among the thinnest on the body, often under one millimeter, and it sits directly over a dense network of small veins and the orbicularis oculi muscle. When that skin is especially thin or pale, the bluish or purplish tone of the underlying structures shows through. This type often looks worse with fatigue, dehydration, alcohol, or nasal congestion, all of which affect vascular dilation and fluid dynamics, which is why the tired look is real even though sleep alone rarely erases the circles. Treatments here aim to thicken the skin or reduce the show-through: retinoids and peptides that support collagen over months, caffeine-containing topicals that temporarily constrict superficial vessels, and in clinical settings, certain lasers or carefully placed fillers that add a diffusing layer between vessel and surface. Note the word temporarily on caffeine: the effect measured in studies is short-lived and modest.
Structural dark circles, sometimes called tear trough shadows, are an optics problem. As the midface loses volume with age, or in people born with deep-set eyes or a pronounced tear trough groove, overhead lighting casts a shadow into the hollow between the lower eyelid and cheek. No cream can lighten a shadow, because there is no pigment or vessel to target. This explains a common frustration: someone diligently applies brightening serums for a year with zero change. The interventions that address structure are physical, including hyaluronic acid filler placed by an experienced injector, fat repositioning during lower blepharoplasty in more advanced cases, and on the cosmetic side, light-reflecting concealers that visually fill the shadow.
Most people are a mix. A middle-aged patient might have mild dermal pigment, thinning skin revealing vessels, and an emerging tear trough all at once, which is why single-mechanism products underperform. The stretch test and the lighting test are screening tools, not diagnoses. Conditions such as periorbital dermatitis, thyroid-related changes, and certain medication effects can mimic or worsen dark circles, so persistent or rapidly changing discoloration deserves an evaluation by a dermatologist, who may use a Wood's lamp or dermoscopy to confirm where the color actually lives.
The practical takeaway: spend two minutes with a mirror and daylight before spending anything else. Matching the treatment to the mechanism is the single biggest predictor of whether your dark circle routine will work, and it costs nothing to check.
