Pigment, Vessels, or Shadow? The Three-Minute Self-Test That Tells You Which Dark Circle You Actually Have
Most under-eye treatments fail because they target the wrong cause. A simple stretch-and-light examination used in dermatology clinics can sort circles into three categories, each with a different fix.

Ask a dermatologist why so many dark circle products disappoint, and you will hear a version of the same answer: people treat the color they see, not the mechanism producing it. Under-eye darkness is not one condition. Clinically, it sorts into three broad categories, and the interventions that help one can do nothing for the others, or occasionally make them look worse. The good news is that a rough self-assessment takes about three minutes, a mirror, and decent daylight.
The three mechanisms, briefly. The first is pigmentary darkness, where melanin is overproduced or deposited in the thin skin below the eye. This is more common in medium to deep skin tones, often runs in families, and can be aggravated by rubbing, eczema, allergies, and sun exposure. The second is vascular darkness, where the network of small veins and capillaries under the eye shows through the skin. Under-eye skin is among the thinnest on the body, often under half a millimeter, so blood vessels that would be invisible on the cheek read as a bluish, purplish, or reddish cast here. The third is structural shadow, which is not a color problem at all. A groove where the lower eyelid meets the cheek, called the tear trough, or puffiness from fat pads above it, creates a valley. Overhead light cannot reach into the valley, and the eye reads the resulting shadow as darkness.
Test one: the stretch test. Look in a mirror and gently pull the under-eye skin downward and slightly outward with one finger. Watch what happens to the dark area. If the darkness stays exactly as dark while the skin is stretched, pigment in the skin itself is likely a major contributor, because melanin travels with the skin. If the darkness becomes more visible or appears bluer when stretched, that points toward a vascular cause, since stretching thins the skin further and lets vessels show through more. If the darkness largely disappears when you stretch, because you have flattened out the groove, structure and shadow are doing most of the work.
Test two: change the light. Stand under a harsh overhead light, then hold a phone flashlight directly in front of your face at eye level and compare. Structural shadow changes dramatically with lighting direction: it looks severe under overhead light and can nearly vanish with frontal light. Pigmentary and vascular darkness stay put regardless of where the light comes from. This is also why people often think their circles got worse in a specific bathroom or office. Frequently the circles did not change, the lighting did.
Test three: tilt your head back. Recline and look at your under-eye area in a handheld mirror. If puffiness and shadow soften when you are horizontal, fluid and fat position are involved, again pointing toward a structural component. Vascular darkness can also shift with position and tends to look worse after poor sleep, alcohol, or nasal congestion, because all three affect blood pooling and vessel dilation in the periorbital area.
Why the category changes the treatment. For pigmentary circles, the relevant tools are the ones that address melanin: strict daily sun protection, topical agents such as azelaic acid, kojic acid, vitamin C, or prescription retinoids, and in-office options like gentle chemical peels or specific pigment-targeting lasers. Critically, stopping the habit of rubbing itchy eyes matters, because chronic friction drives pigment in this area, and untreated allergies keep the cycle going. For vascular circles, pigment-fading ingredients are largely wasted. The logic instead is to thicken the skin over time, which retinoids and certain peptides can modestly do, to constrict vessels temporarily, which is what caffeine-containing eye products attempt, and to manage triggers like congestion and sleep position. For structural shadow, no cream will help meaningfully, because there is no color to fade. The mainstream options are volume-based: hyaluronic acid filler placed carefully in the tear trough by an experienced injector, or surgical repositioning of fat in more pronounced cases. Concealer strategy also differs: shadow responds well to a slightly lighter, peach-toned corrector, while heavy concealer over a puffy structural circle can emphasize the bulge.
Most people are a mix. In practice, clinicians see combinations constantly: a genetic pigmentary base, thin skin showing vessels, plus age-related volume loss deepening the trough. That is why a single product review is a poor guide to what will work for you. The honest framing is that treatment should be layered in the same proportions as the causes.
When to see a professional. If darkness appeared suddenly, is one-sided, or comes with swelling, itching, or skin changes, that warrants a medical evaluation rather than a skincare purchase, since thyroid conditions, dermatitis, and other medical issues can present around the eyes. For everyone else, running the stretch test before spending money is the single highest-value step. It costs nothing, and it tells you which shelf of the pharmacy, if any, is even relevant to your face.
